“Not appreciating the value of our social superpowers is our kryptonite.” M. Lieberman, Neuroscientist and author of SOCIAL
Welcome to the newest || NERD WORDS for HR ||,
the future of work has people managers and HR experts thinking about how work itself should be organized and which perks or HR practices are needed to keep future talents motivated and committed, especially in tight labor markets. We ask ourselves, what are these talents going to seek in a job or firm: High salaries? flexible work arrangements? work-family balance? the latest technologies? modern office spaces? meaningful work? digital HR processes?
The good news, our growing digital capabilities empower us to find out what the answers to these questions are and how to personalize our people managements for the needs of the people we manage.
Here’s the bad news: We all ask the wrong questions, most of the time.
It’s social phenomena that really get humans’ attention and catch our excitement. It seems we somehow cannot resist the electrifying feeling of collaboration, co-creation, belongingness, and team work. Above all, it’s the “social” in social media that made us all susceptible to giving access to our most personal data - voluntarily. We exchange the individual privacy for the utility of feeling connected across the globe.
HR example: Recently, we have seen a rise of a movement called “working out loud” (WOL) - a method of facilitating interpersonal learning and information exchange, even across organizational boundries (yes, in the face of compliance ;)). WOL works because it creates social exchange and feelings of togetherness. It fosters group cohesion and eases our social cravings in our overly individualized work environments.
The fourth issue of || NERD WORDS for HR || entails talks, articles, and resources about the social element of our brains and work lives. As always, I add my personal implications for HR!
