Daily Overview
Sections of the Sanibel Causeway, which connects Sanibel Island to the Florida mainland, were washed away by Hurricane Ian. Many of Sanibel Island’s 6,500 residents evacuated before the storm, but hundreds who stayed were left stranded by the damage. Some have since been rescued by helicopter or ferry. Officials believe the entire causeway, which spans 3 miles (5 kilometers), will need to be rebuilt.
