Expect moisture from the atmospheric to drift northward into the Olympic Peninsula and British Columbia overnight. As the rain moves out this evening, pleasantly dry weather with mostly cloudy skies will prevail in Portland through much of the day on Wednesday. As the low-pressure system driving the river moves inland, it will drag a cold front through our area overnight. This cold front will bring periods of rain lasting through just about lunchtime on Thursday.

The heatwave emergency in Argentina dramatically escalated as a major power grid failure left thousands without electricity on Tuesday. Argentina’s capital city, Buenos Aires, recorded its second-highest temperature on record at 41.1 Celsius (105 Fahrenheit), according to the National Meteorological Service in Argentina. 

Power companies reported outages as demand for electricity increased, in order to cool homes in the extreme heat. Temperatures above 40 Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) will continue to impact the country for the rest of the week. Already, drinking water providers asked citizens to optimize water usage because of power outages impacting water purification systems. This is likely to be an ongoing and potentially devastating emergency.
