Oi! Tudo bem? Hello! How are you?
Here at CSUPERB, we have been collaborating to co-create new programming this Spring for you. Specifically, we have been working with our partner affinity group, CSU COAST, to bring
Dr. Terrell Morton to the CSU (more information below). We have been working internally to take the next steps to support CSUPERB in embracing an inclusive biotechnology community with our code of conduct. Last, our I-Corps team applications are due soon, (see below).
We have been monitoring changes at NIH as it relates to grant opportunities. Paula Fischhaber has reviewed the new program, Support for Research Excellence (SuRE) Award, that is now available (see below).

A Conversation on Power, Structural Racism, and Perceptions of Normality in STEM Through a Lens of Critical Race Theory
CSUPERB is pleased to partner with CSU COAST and jointly host Dr. Terrell Morton, Assistant Professor of Identity and Justice in STEM Education at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Dr. Morton will provide participants with professional development in equity and justice through naming systemic racism and unpacking its implications on the lived experiences of racially minoritized people in STEM. Through the Critical Race Theory-informed approach, participants will receive tangible tools and resources that prompt: awareness, understanding, and action towards racial equity and justice through individual-personal as well as individual-professional roles and responsibilities.
Format: The webinar will consist of a lecture followed by an optional interactive conversation in which participants will explore ways to implement principles from the lecture. We invite you to attend the lecture and participate in the conversation.
The webinar is on Wednesday, April 28, 2021 from 11:00 am - 12:30 pm PST

NIH Support for Research Excellence (SuRE) Program
The NIH recently released announcements for two of the three SuRE program award mechanisms, the “SuRE Award”, and the “SuRE-First Award”. In essence, these replace the SCORE SC3 and SC2 mechanisms. The program does not have an analog to the SC1.
Highlights:
- SuRE
- $100K per year
- 4 years max
- One funding cycle per year (May deadline)
- SuRE-First
- $125K per year
- 4 years max
- One funding cycle per year (September deadline)
- Available only to faculty who have not had prior independent external research grants
- A campus can hold a maximum of 20 active SuRE + SC1 + SC3 awards at a time, analogously to how the SCORE program was structured.
- A campus is eligible to apply if it has received no more than $6 million dollars per year (total costs) from NIH Research Project Grants (RPGs) in each of the preceding two fiscal years. The activity codes defined as RPGs do not include the U54 activity code (BUILD grants).
- A campus is eligible to apply if 25% of its enrolled undergraduates are supported by Pell grants.
- SCORE grant holders in their final year of funding (including one-year no cost extension) are eligible to apply.
- No announcement has been yet made about a National Resource Center for the SuRE Program Award, per the December NOT-GM-21-009 notice, but we are told by the Program Officials that the deadline is still scheduled for September, 25, 2021.
