Hebrew Q&A
In the Bible, God calls Samuel, meaning “God has heard”. What would be the Hebrew for “servant heard”?
Samuel (in Hebrew, Shmuel) does not mean “God has heard”: whoever told you that may be thinking it’s spelled שמוע-אל, i.e. “Shmua-el”—but it’s not. The consonant ע (ayin) is missing, and it doesn’t go missing lightly.

CC#1 – Accommodation Needed
A retired Jewish couple (non-members of Congregation Emanu-El) is looking for a suite or an apartment in Victoria as soon as possible as they will need to move out on August 15th due to a renovation requested by the owner of the apartment. The senior male has a breathing problem, and is not well.

CC#2 – Shabbat Gift Bags
Congregation Emanu-El is distributing to 20 households each month Shabbat Gift Bags. They are being given to everyone, regardless of need, letting everyone know that they are appreciated.
We need drivers who will distribute the bags. It takes about 2 hours of time once a month. – Charlotte Sutker

CC#4 – Family Seeking Accommodation
Sara Berhane, her husband and three young children (all below 10 years old) need a place to live in or near Victoria. They are about to arrive here as refugees from Eritrea, a country they have been forced to leave due to religious persecution. A two bedroom house or apartment is needed…an almost impossible to find for an affordable low-income rent. Do you have such a place, or know of one? If so, please contact Stan Benjamin at 250.370.7068 or email sbenjamin@plannet.ca

The Last Word
It was said that Charlie Chaplin was the only person in Hollywood that Albert Einstein wanted to meet. In 1931, he got his chance to talk to the actor at the premiere of the film City Lights.
Einstein said to him: “What I most admire about your art, is your universality. You don’t say a word—yet the world understands you!”
