Simon Schlesinger was in the men’s dressing room of the gym after his workout, when the cellphone on a bench near him rang, several times. Glancing at the screen, he shrugged and answered it, putting it on speakerphone. Everyone else in the room listened in.
Simon: “Hi!”
Voice: “Hi Honey, it’s me. Are you at the club?”
Simon: “Yes.”
Voice: “Well, I’m at the shops now, and found this beautiful leather coat. It’s only $2,000—is it OK if I buy it?”
Simon: “Sure, honey—go ahead, if you like it that much.”
Voice: “I also stopped by the Lexus dealership and saw the new models. I saw one I really liked.”
Simon (warily): “How much?”
Voice: “$90,000.”
Simon (pausing to think): “OK—but for that price I want it with all the options.”
Voice: “Great! Oh, and one more thing. I was just talking to Janie, and found out that the house I wanted last year is back on the market. They’re asking $3.98 million for it.”
Simon: “Hmm. Well, then, go ahead and make an offer of 3.9 even. They’ll probably take it. If not, we can go the extra eighty-thousand, if it’s what you want.”
Voice: “OK. I’ll see you later! Love you…”
Simon: “Bye! Love you, too…”
Simon hung up. The other men in the locker were staring at him, open-mouthed in astonishment.
