Tom and Geoff, who had both been convicted for crimes committed while under diminished responsibility, are waiting for a general knowledge test to determine if they are eligible to go on parole.
Tom walks into the room and the chief psychiatrist asks him: “So, who discovered America?”
Tom replies: “Christopher Columbus.”
The psychiatrist asks: “And when did this happen?”
Tom: “About 300 years ago.”
The psychiatrist then asks: “Do aliens exist?”
Tom: “Possibly—but there is no proof of that yet.”
The psychiatrist: “Okay, you’re good to go.”
Tom comes out of the committee room with a broad smile on his face.
“How did it go?” asked Geoff, anxiously.
“Fantastic,” said Tom. “Look, it’s easy—just answer like this: ‘Christopher Columbus’, ‘About 300 years ago,’ and ‘Maybe, but there’s no proof of that yet.’”
