The Colette Gazette - June 25, 2021
The mission of The Colette Louise Tisdahl Foundation is to improve outcomes of pregnancy, childbirth, prematurity, and infancy, as well as aid in the grieving process through financial assistance, education, and advocacy
Dear Friend,
Deciding to start and run this foundation was not an easy decision and I knew that there would be triggers reading stories that were similar to ours, stories about babies born at the same time or even earlier than Colette who lived, and all. Every story we hear is heartbreaking, but there are so many that really impact you on another level.
This past week, when we reviewed applications as we usually do, we were drained. It seemed like every application was worse than the one before it and all of them had other complications besides the crisis that led them to us. We read about a mom who travels back and forth two hours one-way to see her child because that is the closest NICU for her child’s needs in the area. We read about an underage mom who was denied access to free housing for hospital parents because she was under 18, forcing her to pay for a hotel room in order to be close to her child. We read about a family where domestic violence has caused grave injury to mom and also resulted in the premature birth and NICU stay for child.
The stories were tough, but what was even tougher was that the need was so much greater than what we could provide and continue to provide in the future. In sum, we reviewed 13 applications with a total request of $25,000. We were able to cover $7,000 from our resources, which is above the normal $5,000 total per week that we give away. Thanks to a generous grant from Prolacta Bioscience Foundation, we covered another $4,000. But, that meant that $13,000 did not get covered. And that hurts.
So, with that in mind, we are launching a donation drive to create a special fund for these types of cases–the ones that have added complications and difficulties. Our goal is to raise $15,000 by the end of July and we know we can do it, but only with your help! No donation is too small (or too large). If you’re able to, please contribute. 100% of donations go to our financial assistance fund to help families in crisis due to high-risk pregnancy, pregnancy complications, NICU stays, or loss.
Thanks so much!
Michelle
