House of Clouds: businesses pit vendors against each other to get better deals. Plus, the tech sector smashes through earnings season, thanks to cloud growth.

Topline: The cloud battle now has many fronts
  • It’s raining clouds. IT leaders have not only realized they have options beyond the big three cloud providers, but are also flexing this leverage to secure better deals in a tightening market. With 92% of companies now using a multicloud strategy, organizations are increasingly cherry-picking the best features, stitching together their own tailor-made cloud solutions, while fanning vendors’ competitive flames  to keep soaring cloud costs at bay. Mervyn Lally, global chief enterprise architect at Experian, says the company now uses four different clouds and “takes advantage” of the pressure that individual providers feel. “More options are good,” he says. And increasingly, those options include alternative cloud providers: 20% of all public cloud revenue went to alternative providers last year, according to Gartner
By the numbers:
  • If cloud growth was an Olympic event, records would be broken left and right. Cloud providers again saw unprecedented gains, with revenue climbing 54% YoY in the latest round of earnings reports. The verdict? Cloud’s pandemic-fueled adoption bump shows few signs of receding.
What you need to know:
In the Twittersphere:
  • James Watters, CTO of Modern Application Platforms, VMware (@wattersjames): Customers are telling me that they want best of breed features they can run on multiple-clouds. They love betting on companies like @SnowflakeDB @confluentinc who run everywhere vs. being limited.
