Back In Session

{{first_name}}, I’m back!
Now that September is upon us, I’ve returned from my August recess. So much has happened since then, unlike with Congress, that I feel the need to cover a few topics in today’s newsletter. I’ll get back to regularly scheduled programming next week, but with so much to discuss let’s get started. It’s good to be back.
  • The NFL returned last night with the defending champion St. Louis Rams taking a decisive loss at the hands of the Buffalo Bills and the worst haircut of all time. Matthew Stafford should’ve prepared more in the offseason instead of filming those awful Little Caesars commercials.
  • Between Little Caesars being the official pizza sponsor, Smirnoff being the official vodka sponsor, and the way they go out of their way to advertise gambling these days, the NFL does not care about the health of its fans. I knew it didn’t care about the players, but now it’s clear that they don’t care about anyone.
  • Seattle Public Schools were scheduled to return this week but they’re still on an August recess also as the teachers union has decided to go on strike. The union is demanding better pay and better mental health resources for its teachers. Also, the union is asking for better teacher-to-student ratios, specifically regarding special education teachers. I honestly don’t see how this concludes anytime soon because the school district most likely doesn’t have the funding to pay their teachers better or hire more teachers to improve the teacher-to-student ratios, so we’ll have to see how this plays out.
  • The city of Jackson, Mississippi recently had a water shortage due to failing facilities. First, there was a boil-water notice, then issues at the water treatment facility, and finally the water pressure began not working properly. Officials say that the city has been on the cusp of some type of catastrophe for quite some time and this was simply the tipping point. We need to start investing in our local infrastructure budgets or I can foresee this occurring more often soon.
  • LSU head football coach Brian Kelly did Brian Kelly things. Moving on.
  • RIP Queen Elizabeth II.
  • At the MTV Video Music Awards, Jack Harlow performed the song of the summer “First Class” with a little help from Fergie. This was the collaboration I didn’t know I needed.
  • Last but certainly not least, the Joe Biden administration has approved a plan for student loan forgiveness if you meet certain criteria. You need to have an income below a certain threshold, have loans over at least $10,000, and be able to pass a field sobriety catwalk test. It’s a start.
