RISE is back for more dim sum

hello from the hyper room
Hello from the Hyper Room,
Hello new and OG subscribers - this is a bi-weekly update from me, you are getting this because you are in my personal network, you subscribed on Twitter or connected with me on social media.

RISE Returns to Hong Kong in 2022

You’ve no doubt heard the news that RISE is moving back to Hong Kong and committing to FIVE years, after a pivot away from our announced move to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia late last year.
TBH I’m excited just to have RISE live again ANYWHERE after missing both 2020 and 2021, which just seems so crazy, so once we have Web Summit done in November the entire team focuses on RISE. It will be at the AsiaWorld Expo so expect Web Summit scale stages and more meeting spaces and food options!
So many people have already reached out to support in different ways which is so great, and with the news of zero cases in HK, expect to see me on the streets of Lan Kwai Fong again soon, if my name isn’t Nicole Kidman.
6 WEEKS TO WEB SUMMIT! It’s on and everyone is super excited, so definitely reach out if you have not yet. I still have some spots left in my entourage to Lisbon, just hit reply if interested.
Now there are 10 Unicorns in Vancouver
This is the Canadian unicorn creature called a narwhal, but it's real.

Last newsletter, I told you there were 9 unicorns in Vancouver and now there are 10. Really quite amazing what’s been happening in Vancouver. To compare, Hong Kong also discovered it’s 10th unicorn this past June (Congrats Amber!)
My friends over at the Vancouver Tech Journal have written up about them but here is the list:
  • Dapper Labs (Blockchain)
  • Blockstream (Blockchain)
  • Trulioo (Compliance)
  • Visier (HR)
  • GeoComply (Cybersecurity)
  • Nexii (PropTech)
  • Clio (LegalTech)
  • Galvanize (Compliance) - technically bought for $1B
  • Thinkific (EdTech) - went IPO.
  • AbCellera (HealthTech) - went IPO.
Here is a list of Vancouver’s Soonicorns.
A $300 Subcription for Online Comics?
As mentioned, I am making my own comic book - and in doing research in the digital comics space and I jumped all in on a $300 Substack - what do I get and what is it and how is it the future of The Creator Economy? Check out my thoughts here.
Shang-Chi is fantastic
I loved Shang-Chi so much I jumped back in the podcast booth with my friend Andy Park - who I met on Clubhouse - and sat him down to reveal all the design secrets he and his team at Marvel Studios‘ Visual Development department are working on and how they designed all the cool stuff in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Very enlightening as he refers to Marvel Studios as a “startup” before the Disney acquisition. Follow this link to the podcast format of your choice.

Techstars Toronto MD, co-host of Collision, and more importantly my brother-from-another-mother Sunil Sharma was in Vancouver recently to congratulate me personally on RISE’s move back to Canada! Good to see Sunil in-person again since 2019! We will be doing our usual co-co-hosting with Paddy Cosgrave at Web Summit in Lisbon.
Techstars Toronto applications close soon - have a look on applying to this world class program.
Meanwhile over in Hawaii at Blue Startups they started Cohort 13 IN PERSON in Honolulu. You can see the teams here.
I’ve watched 500 Startups grow since its started and its great to see them rebrand themselves as 500 Global and raised a new $140mm fund.
I did order the new iPhone 13. I always see an improvement every year so I will continue to upgrade. I get it this Friday so will post a review for next issue.
Exciting news this past week for Asian startups Carousell (new Unicorn), Prenetics (SPACing it!) and EventX (Series B) and my friend Charles sent me a copy of his book Block Kong.
Top image is from The Matrix Resurrections trailer that I am very very excited to see, but do not fall down this rabbit hole that I did.
That’s it for this blast - thanks for being here!
Your friend,
Casey
