hello from the hyper room
If you recall I send these ‘Little hello’ emails out as opposed to following me on social media.
So back in January, Twitter bought Revue (the platform I am using to send this to you) and they’ve finally connected the two together and is allowing me to add this newsletter right on my Twitter profile so I will take advantage of this for longer form content so expect these on a monthly basis going forward…

Live in Lisbon: Web Summit 2021

So the big thing I am working towards is getting on a plane and flying to Portugal for the first LIVE event we will be hosting since 2019 for Web Summit 2021.
It seems like we have been in a time bubble but it looks like the stars are aligning for a reduced capacity IRL event and it seems the industry is ready for it as the ticket pre-sales have been extremely encouraging.
I am in the process of rounding up both Asia-based and West Coast entourages to join me. Asia looks like it will still be a challenge getting back in to their respective countries, Vancouver is all ready to go.
If you are reading this and didn’t get an invite definitely reach out. I will be organizing some small dinners at my favorite Lisbon restaurant that I have missed so much. For more info check out: WebSummit.com.
RISE Podcast: Did you hear this podcast I did with Yat Siu of Animoca on the future of NFTs? I thought it was pretty good, accessible and got me thinking of a lot of ideas. Listen to it on Apple or Spotify Podcasts.

Everyone is asking me what its like here and it’s great - I guess I need to do videos on this, but like we did in HK, it takes a mix of media and meetups to build an ecosystem and get the word out and the Vancouver Tech Journal is doing that led by William Johnson.
There are 9 unicorns in Vancouver alone. There are the same number in Hong Kong! I am as amazed as anyone to discover this.
I’m even more excited that the city has welcomed so many new tech people from Asia since I’ve been here. Not just HK people but Japan, India are coming in droves and diversifying the city and there are lots of jobs in the tech sector. Even some friends and colleagues from Europe have made the move. It is a perfect place for work-life-balance and if the tech scene continues to grow at this rapid clip it will be very exciting.
If you are interested in learning more, let me know. Canada has some very exciting visas for startups.

Vancouver as an eSports Hub

I am working out of the first eSports cowork space in the world called The Home Key. I am very excited about the eSports space I think the time for it is now and my interest in events and now gaming. (I am getting good at Fortnite) has fueled my interest.
The Vancouver Canucks invested in the Overwatch league with the the Vancouver Titans. Battlefy, The Gaming and are all based in Vancouver. Check out this great report done by the Vancouver Economic Commission on the vertical and who the players are - I will definitely be watching this space.
Web Comics to be a $11.2 Billion Industry
I am frequently updating this list of digital comics news because it’s exciting that Revue-competitor Substack has gone into comics and lured away some of the biggest talent from Marvel and DC to their Patreon-like platform. I have spent the pandemic working on my own comics and wanted to see what options I had to release them, and it seems like this industry is growing like crazy too.
What is my comic about? You will have to stay subscribed to find out but I am reserving a copy of the #1 issue for you.
