This week, ONE Championship announced
that they would be appointing Leo Vieira as their Vice President of grappling and the fact that they’re going all in on grappling like that makes the hobbyist grappler in me very happy.
ONE Championship is doing a lot of stuff to get me on board with their product these days.
Not that I wasn’t already, but the amount of content they have been putting on YouTube
lately along with the menu of martial arts competition has made me go all in on the promotion. It will be easier to get into once they start showing their events on Amazon’s Prime Video
Vieira, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Champion, Pan American Champion, and ADCC World Champion will help with the growing roster of world class grapplers that have been showcased in ONE Championship events. Recently, Danielle Kelly and Mikey Musumeci made their debuts and the promotion has already featured Gary Tonon in both MMA and grappling matches to their menu of martial arts events.
Tonon will face Tye Ruotolo at ONE 157 on May 20 and Kade Ruotolo is scheduled to face Shinya Aoki on the same card. Adding grappling events to cards recently seems to have been more frequent so adding a Vice President for grappling seems to make a lot of sense.
Chairman and CEO of ONE Championship said, “ Leo is a true trailblazer in martial arts, and as we continue to add depth to our grappling roster, his guidance will be invaluable. ONE is proud to continue providing the world’s best martial arts athletes with a platform to showcase their unique talents and skills.”
Vieira also said he was “thrilled” to take the position and that he appreciated the “trust and opportunity that Chatri and the ONE team have given me to shape ONE’s submission grappling divisions. As a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt for over 25 years, I have been able to positively impact lives as a competitor, professor, and team leader, and I will continue to do so at ONE. It is a dream come true to work alongside people who share similar values and beliefs about martial arts as I do. I am committed to building the world’s most exciting submission grappling promotion with ONE’s amazingly talented roster.”
Along with the competitors already mentioned, their other competitors include; Gordon Ryan, Andre Galvao, Renato Canuto, Tainan Dalpra, and Jessa Khan. Crossovers to MMA have already happened both ways too with MMA fighters facing grapplers under the grappling rule set and along with Tonon, Marcus “Buchecha” Almeida competing in MMA.
If you like martial arts competition, ONE Championship seems to be covering all the aspects of it.
