The British School in The Netherlands - News & Jobs
Tim Hare, Head of Humanities Faculty/Head of Business Studies
Senior School Voorschoten

Is teaching at the BSN your first position abroad?
I have lived in Kuwait, Tanzania, Czech Republic – but not teaching, I worked in Finance
What brought you to The Netherlands?
My wife is Dutch, we wanted our children to experience Dutch culture & language. I researched the type of school I wanted to work in/my children to be educated in and the BSN was the closest fit.
What was the biggest adjustment/challenge when moving to The Netherlands?
Leaving friends/family behind in the UK. Then I discovered Schiphol Airport is only 30 minutes away.
What’s the best thing about living in The Netherlands?
Bicycles = freedom. For us–from cars, for our children–to see their friends, go to school, go to football, swimming etc independently

What advice would you give a new teacher on their first day at BSN?
Smile. Everyone will smile back.
Can you recommend a teaching resource?
My colleagues, just ask them. I have just as much to learn from my colleagues as from fancy, expensive, external courses.
Describe BSN in 3 words?
Diverse, International, Grounded
What was the most recent profession development course/workshop you have done?
First Aid for Sport and Exercise.
What do you do to unwind after a busy day at school?
Sometimes cycling, sometimes football, sometimes a cheeky beer.
What’s your favourite destination for a weekend getaway?
Germany, just 2 hours drive.
Who inspires you?
There’s a lad in Year 7, who arrived in the bike shed same time as me one morning. I muttered something about the annoying rain (after my 5 minute ride). He replied, ‘its fine. And it doesn’t always rain’. Where had he come from? Scheveningen, a 45 minute cycle. Chapeau!
