The British School in The Netherlands
Liz Jones

Learning Technology Manager / Induction Team Lead
Junior School Vlaskamp

Is teaching at the BSN your first position abroad ?
Teaching at BSN was my first expedition overseas. I anticipated moving on but enjoyed The Netherlands and the role here very much so I didn’t move in the end. I then met my husband after six years which made this a long term commitment in more ways than one.

What inspired you to teach internationally?
I needed a change after six years in the UK in two different greater London schools. Many of my friends had already moved so it seemed like a good thing to try for myself.

What inspired you to apply for The BSN?
BSN was one of a number of schools I applied to. Even at that time their provision for technology was impressive. My other schools struggled to fund computing equipment for primary age so it was great to see the facilities here.

What was the biggest adjustment/challenge when moving to The Netherlands?
Being away from familiar places and people takes time, even though the UK is close by. Making the adjustment to being in a foreign place and going to work instead of being on holiday is strange but The Netherlands is easy to adjust to eventually.

What’s the best thing about living in The Netherlands?
It’s a great country for transport and access to other places. You can drive or take the train to the rest of Europe easily and at reasonable cost. It’s a great base to explore other lands.

What advice would you give a new teacher on their first day at BSN?
BSN is a complex organisation. It is better at the start to accept that you won’t know the school inside out on day one. Concentrate on the familiar things: your students and the learning. That should help you to start settling in.

What’s the most valuable lesson you have learned since joining the BSN?
Be a learner, the students here have a range of experience. They can give you a great perspective on their culture and learning. As a leader, the BSN has taught me to listen and benefit from the many talented colleagues that I have here.

What was the most recent profession development course/workshop you have done?
I am currently studying the second year of a Post Graduate at The University of Northampton in Teaching Primary computing. It has benefitted my teaching and the BSN has supported my enrolment in the course.

Can you recommend a teaching resource?
As a digital leader, I am always interested in new technologies. At BSN, we use a range of tools including iPads and PCs. I enjoy using both to enhance the learning in my classroom.

Describe BSN in 3 words?
Supportive, innovative, international

What do you do to unwind after a busy day at school?
I am a keen environmentalist. So, I am really keen to walk in the woodland, visit the school bees or relax in one of the many outdoor spaces around the Hague.

What’s your favourite destination for a weekend getaway?
I learned to scuba dive in The Netherlands. The south of the country has some lovely open spaces and water for all kinds of activities. It’s an easy place to get to for the weekend.

Who inspires you?
Ada Lovelace, the woman who had the concept of the first computer. Even though she didn’t have the technology, she was able to explore new ideas and think creatively.
