During the last two years at JSL, we have undertaken a deliberate drive to shift attitudes, break old habits and create an enabling environment to support our students’ wellbeing and mental health. Our approach has included building resilience through an emphasis on Growth Mindset and The Learning Pit; teaching children to identify, name and label emotions, as well as to develop strategies to cope with difficult feelings; and ensuring that learning is supported by regular brain breaks and physical activity. The key aim, which of course will take time to achieve, is to ensure that mental health awareness becomes an intrinsic element of teaching, learning and thriving in our school which has ‘head, hand and heart’ at the core of its ethos.
To find out about the ways in which we have approached this, please read this article (below) written by Karren van Zoest (Headteacher) and Rhiannon Phillips-Bianco (Wellbeing and Mental Health Curriculum Leader) and published by International School magazine.
