The Netherlands is a great country to live in! Of course, we would say that, but, you don’t have to take our word for it. According to the World Economic Forum’s 2019 Global Competitiveness Index (GCI), The Netherlands has the most competitive economy in Europe and the 4th globally (Singapore is top). What does that mean? Well, the key word is ‘productivity’ and the factors and institutions that influence it e.g. macro-economic stability, infrastructure, business dynamism etc. The index is designed for comparative analysis between countries to enable them to work together and become more productive and prosper. The fascinating report goes in to detail:

“[The Netherlands] receives high marks for macroeconomic stability (100), health (94.2, 21st) and infrastructure quality (94.3, 2nd). The innovation ecosystem is well developed, thanks to a highly skilled workforce (84.6, 4th), vibrant business dynamism (80.6, 2nd, just behind the United States) and advanced innovation capability (76.9, 10th). The institutional framework is among the best in the world (78.6, 4th), too, scoring high in every aspect, including security (90.1, 17th), checks and balances (81.1, 3rd), efficiency (77.1, 5th) and commitment of the government to sustainability (88.6, 3rd).”

Also, according to another index, the OECD Better Life Index, which compares wellbeing across countries on 11 topics, The Netherlands tops the chart for work-life balance and scores highly on jobs and earnings, housing, education and skills, subjective well-being, social connections, environmental quality, personal security, civic engagement, and health status. There are lots of fun interactive elements on this site whereby you can rate the topics of importance to you and see which countries score the highest.
