BSN News & Jobs - An Exceptional First Year

The British School in The Netherlands - HR
The latest cohort of new staff members recently participated in an end of year celebration. Our gold standard induction process is organised by the BSN’s ILA (International Leadership Academy) and a cross campus team, and lasts for a whole year. It begins with the ‘BSN Big Weekend’, a programme of social events designed to welcome new starters to the Netherlands and help them quickly form a support/friendship group. Various social and informative gatherings are held throughout the year; and, we always close with a celebration. By this time, cross campus friendships have been solidified and everyone is happy to have survived their milestone first year; no small achievement; getting to grips with a new job in a completely new environment.
Although the Covid-19 restrictions in The Netherlands have been (somewhat) eased, we felt that an online event was still the best option this time around – to ensure that everyone was comfortable and able to join. Social distancing still applies. So, virtually, we came together (with drinks in hand) to enjoy each other’s company and an exhibition of photos; staff were invited to submit a photo that summed up their year and could vote for the best one. Some members of staff had also created videos sharing overviews of their experiences. Despite the bad things that have happened this year, there were clearly also plenty of moments worthy of celebration. So, we ended on a positive note.
Big thanks to the wonderful BSN Induction team for all that you do, year round. Next year, we hope to organise a more traditional face-to-face get together.
