According to the DHL Global Connectedness Index (GCI) 2018–a detailed analysis of globalisation, measured by international flows of trade, capital, information and people–The Netherlands is the world’s most connected country. This result isn’t surprising to those of us who live there.

Being a relatively small country located on the coast of mainland Europe, it’s easy to physically cross The Netherlands’ borders by foot, bicycle, car, train, boat or plane. Amsterdam’s airport, Schiphol, offers the greatest direct connectivity of all European airports with 4861 direct flights every week. Many BSN staff members take advantage and travel to other European cities for weekend getaways. BSN students also benefit–we have an extensive programme of international schools trips.

Many major international companies are Dutch (or Dutch-British) such as ING, Philips, Heineken, Shell and Unilever (banks, bulbs, beer and oil as some might say).

Interestingly enough, the index also reveals that we are far less globalised than we might think; although globalism is on the rise, this eye-opening graphic really puts that in perspective:
For all its interconnectedness, The Netherlands has a strong identity and traditions; like King’s Day, which we celebrate on 27 April, the King’s birthday, with street parties, concerts and flea markets. Everyone dresses up in the national colour of orange—of course BSN participates!

We think The Netherlands is the perfect place for a “Glocalist”; someone who, according to DHL’s quiz, balances a global taste and mindset with strong local roots; they are connected to the world, but protective of what they consider to be local and authentic; not necessarily someone who travels a lot but one who appreciates the choice as a consumer to pick and mix from a global and local offering.
