School is in! 💙 Briercrest Connections: September 2020

Briercrest Connections
School is in! Welcome to the September edition of Briercrest Connections. Here you will find the latest news, blogs and campus happenings.

Check In Day was cold, but our hearts were warmed to have students back.
Check In Day was cold, but our hearts were warmed to have students back.
Check In Days for Briercrest College and Christian Academy took place on September 7th and 8th. Met with a whole new set of health guidelines, our intrepid staff set out to pull off a safe and efficient day for our high school and college students. Many familiar faces returned to campus, including alumni dropping off their kids at Briercrest. 💙 We love to see it.
A special “Thank You!!” is in order to all the student leaders and staff who bundled up to serve. Starting off a year like this takes a LOT of helping hands, and we’re grateful to each and every one of them.
If you were on campus, you probably saw Dr. Michael Pawelke and Dr. Don Taylor out in front coordinating student health checks. We’re thankful for their example of humble leadership alongside all our staff volunteers! See them in action here. 👇
COVID Update
As you may have heard, Briercrest made the news last week after a student received a call that they had tested positive for COVID-19 a few hours into our College Check In Day.
The student was only in close contact with one other student before receiving the call, and upon receiving their results the student immediately notified our Health Services staff and went into isolation. The student who they had contact with was also placed in isolation.
The immediacy of our response was made possible by a proactive daily health tracking and notification system. Contact tracing was greatly simplified by our adherence to Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) guidelines.
For the Fall semester, we will be posting weekly COVID updates to our website. You can access up-to-date information by clicking here. You can also read our first weekly update at the link below.
In previous years, Briercrest Olympics (formerly Youth Quake Olympics) have involved a lot of crowding, a lot of shouting, and a lot of fun—a perfect way to welcome students back to campus and help them bond as dorm-mates. The challenge this year, of course, was to keep up the energy and fun while also keeping our on-campus health guidelines.
Thanks to some quick thinking from our Youth Quake team, the Briercrest Olympics has developed into a semester-long challenge. We had our first event last weekend, where students had to recreate classic Briercrest photos with a 2020 spin. Here are some of the results.
Then: A snowy sign scene from the BBI days
Now: Snow is just a creative iPhone edit away
Then: An intense half-time huddle with Carl Hinderager
Now: Add masks (and don’t miss the guy in the back!)
Then: Holding an interview
Now: A reminder that what was once cutting-edge technology can now fit in our pockets

Next week, our Seminary team is hosting a webinar and we want to invite you to grab a spot. Learn about how Briercrest Seminary is training individuals to be great and godly leaders. Recent alumna Kirsty Abbott (Kindrachuk) has returned to Clipper Women’s Volleyball as an apprentice coach through the CCAA Female Apprentice Coach Program!
Kirsty is one of 20 successful applicants nationwide. (You may also recognize her from the viral West Jet graduation that took place this March. Click here to watch the video.) As an apprentice coach, she’ll receive mentorship from Clippers coach Nolan Weinmaster and support from the CCAA, including professional development opportunities and funding.
Kirsty said,
“I’m so excited to work with Nolan and the team and to just give back what was given to me during my time at Briercrest. I’m really humbled to be able ot to learn under experienced coaches and for them to take the time to invest in me.
“I’m drawn to increasing the potential and tapping into people’s capacities that they don’t even know about. There’s always room to grow your God-given potential at Briercrest.”
Kirsty had a stellar five-year career at Briercrest, finishing as the all-time leader in digs (1,281) which placed her second in the ACAC. She earned all-star honours at the ACAC Championship and CCAA National Championship levels and was named an Academic All-Canadian for the 2018-19 season.
During her time with the Clippers, the team won two ACAC Championships, two ACAC silver medals, and earned a spot at the CCAA National Championships three times.

Jason graduated from Briercrest Seminary with a Masters of Divinity (Worship Studies) in 2011 and joined Ottawa’s Metropolitan Bible Church (the Met) that same year as their Worship Pastor. Jason said,
“At the Met I am blessed to be able to lead a dynamic worship and creative arts ministry. The total team is in the neighbourhood of 150 people, including our Worship Bands, Production Team, and our Met Choir and Orchestra which leads worship on selected Sunday services each month and also provides well attended outreach presentations throughout the year.”
He’s also brought his experience and training to the Ottawa Worship Collective to connect with other worship ministry leaders in the region as a teacher, executive team member, and worship leader.
More recently, Jason has helped co-found Core Worship, a ministry that aims to encourage and equip worship ministry leaders for meaningful kingdom ministry. Core Worship hosts a podcast speaking to practical and theological considerations facing worship ministry leaders today—you can find it on Spotify Apply Podcasts, Google Play, or on their website.

Briercrest Seminary is working to remove barriers to ministry training one by one. Now that all our fall seminary classes are happening online, perhaps the only remaining barrier to seminary training is finances.
And we don’t want to see it. So we’re offering Briercrest Seminary degrees for 1/3 of the cost. Here are the details:
We want to help you enhance your ministry. Briercrest Seminary offers courses in biblical studies, theology, counselling, leadership, and ministry with respected scholars.
We don’t want finances to hold you back. So we’ve developed a payment plan where you, your church, and Briercrest each cover 1/3 of tuition. We call it the Partnering for Success Agreement.
Choose from two awesome programs. Partnering for Success applies to our Master of Divinity and Master of Christian Ministries degrees.
Access it anywhere. Each course is one week long, and this fall, they’re all happening online. You can even take two courses before applying to see if it’s a fit.

… or maybe you’re always in a state of ☕️☕️☕️ ? Whether you’re a student again, a new homeschooling family, or just making a lot of adjustments as the activity of September sets in, you’re probably finding yourself clutching a good cup of coffee more often than not these days. We hear you. And we have a blog for you!
Tyler Hagan (College ‘05 and Seminary '19) has combined his love for Briercrest and his passion for great coffee in a special blog feature.
Tyler said,
“I truly loved all my years I spent on campus and know how instrumental they were in shaping the trajectory of my life. When you think about all the significant experiences (that first mentoring meeting, that first all-nighter, even that first date), they were likely spent with a cup of coffee in hand. It’s why I love coffee. It always seems to be a part of life’s most memorable moments.”
Tyler is a pastor in Calgary, a specialty coffee expert, and our latest alumni blogger with a special feature for students brewing coffee in dorm. But we promise that these insights are for more than just dorm students! 👇
