Honouring Paul Magnus: A 50+ Year Legacy | Briercrest Connections - Issue #8

Briercrest Connections
Welcome to the last Briercrest Connections of 2020! We’re thankful to share this newsletter with you.
In this issue:
  • A Christmas message from President Pawelke
  • Celebrating 50 years of service from Dr. Paul Magnus
  • Baking from “Not By Bread Alone”
And much more!

On behalf of all of us at Briercrest, we want to say, “Merry Christmas!”
In his Christmas message this year, Michael shared from Isaiah 9 to remind us that in the midst of Israel’s fear, anxiety, hopelessness, and despair, God sent His Son. Light emerged, and joy was rekindled.
May you rest in the hope of Christ’s birth and the promise of His return this season. May we all know Jesus as our Wonderful Counselor, Almighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. You can listen to the full message by watching the video below.
Merry Christmas from Briercrest 2020
As we begin to 🎁 wrap up 🎁 this semester, we can’t help but feel grateful. Here are a few of the things on our “thanks be to God for…” list this year:
Our teachers and administrators. We really could not have pulled off this semester without their tireless work.
Regular chapels have continued. Although restrictions changed monthly, we were still able to gather for discipleship daily thanks to our discipleship staff. This has been so meaningful for our students. One of them even wrote a blog about it—you can read that at the link below!
Yes, We Do Chapel Daily at Briercrest. Here's Why it Matters.
More thanks: our incredible culinary team. Our cafeteria scored 100% in both Food and Physical safety during a surprise audit! They were the first site to get perfect marks on both under this year’s audit program, which is even more in-depth due to new guidelines. Amazing work!
14 weeks COVID-free. After week 1, no further cases cropped up on campus this semester. God is so good! We can’t wait to have students back safely next semester!
The faithful service of Dr. Paul Magnus. This week, we held a small ceremony to celebrate Dr. Magnus’ 50 years of service at Briercrest and unveil the Paul E. Magnus Centre for Leadership Studies. This is just the start of honoring his work.
You can read about how we’re honouring Dr. Magnus’ work and legacy at the link below.

Though we’ll miss opening our campus up to hundreds this February, the new Youth Quake format has been announced and we’re thrilled about #YQatHome and a chance to keep on serving youth and youth leaders.
Youth Quake will be packed with great content, group activities, and more. It will run all February. And it will be completely free!
You can read this post or follow along on Youth Quake’s YQ Today newsletter for more info.

The best way to celebrate the start of Christmas break is with some Christmas baking and the best way to celebrate the end of 2020 is to bake more bread.
Bake with us this Christmas! We pulled out an old favourite: “Not By Bread Alone,” the classic Briercrest cookbook! We’d love for you to join. Get the recipes for Norwegian Christmas bread and pecan snowballs below.
Are you baking with “Not By Bread Alone” this year? Did you try these recipes? We want to see your Christmas baking!

While you’re baking, enjoy some Christmas tunes. We seem to go back to our favorites every holiday season, so we thought we would pass along a few recommendations if you need new music for your Christmas playlist.
1) LAUREN DAIGLE: BEHOLD. This is the only non-alumni pick on the list. Give it a listen and you’ll understand why we still included it!
2) HEY, IT’S CHRISTMAS! This album was recorded by Briercrest students and alumni a few years ago.
3) HEY, IT’S CHRISTMAS! (AGAIN) They had so much fun the first time that they recorded a second festive album. They also filmed the album release live in The Landing and you can enjoy that here.)
4) LOWANA WALLACE: HYMNS & CAROLS This album has been a favorite for a long while and features our very own Lowana Wallace (now Porter) from Caronport. If you want to hear some of these tunes live, she is doing a free concert from her living room on December 20th! The details can be found here on Facebook.
There are ten months left in our $8.9 million campaign to make Christian education more affordable for Christian young adults. To date, we have raised $4.25 million dollars towards this goal. Thanks be to God!
If you missed it last month, you can watch the campaign video here.
