CAMP MINISTRIES NEED YOUR PRAYERS
CINNAMON BUNS FOR THE FRONT LINE
Our famous Caronport cinnamon buns, baked with love by Chef John, were given away by the hundreds this summer in an effort to thank our local essential health care workers and those travelling through Caronport during the pandemic. Marilyn Muller (our Chief Advancement Officer) joined forces with Theresa Gillis from Sodexo to form a team who could carry out this sweet gesture.
We hope it expresses how deeply we appreciate the countless people who serve us on the front lines every day. Many were understandably hesitant, but we also had some mutually-edifying conversations with people who shared their stories, requested prayer, and expressed how much it blessed them just to be considered. Even though we intended it to be a gesture of appreciation, God used it to minister through us to people who were travelling during this challenging time.
WHAT'S NEW WITH YQ?
Well… YQ2021 is going to look a little different, isn’t it? Join YQ directors Kait and AJ as they talk about youth ministry during COVID-19 and what practical tools youth groups across the country have found effective. They’ve been hard at work trying to figure out what Youth Quake will look like this year, including who’s at the top of YQ’s band list. Along the way they will share stories of past YQ’s, what each of them have been doing to keep busy during social isolation, and what new item AJ has included in his backyard. Secondly, we want to say “welcome!” to Kevin Thiessen, who has joined us on staff to lead the Student Development crew. Anyone who has been a part of the Briercrest community knows how essential the Student Development team is to the high school and college experience.
Kevin joined Briercrest in May 2020 after 10 years of pastoral ministry at Central Baptist Church in Victoria, BC. He served as their Pastor of Outreach and Missions, helping lead the church out of their four walls in both local community engagement and global partnerships. Prior to Central, Kevin completed a Masters of Leadership degree from Briercrest Seminary in 2010. Previous experience included spending 4 years in Dublin, Ireland as a youth pastor as well as aiding the soccer ministry of Athletes in Action Ireland by directing sports camps and leading international tours. Kevin has been actively involved in youth, sports, and pastoral ministry both at home and abroad over the last 20+ years, and has developed a passion for training and equipping men and women for leadership and practical missional living in their everyday lives.
As Dean of Students, Kevin’s excited to invest in students and staff alike to inspire, disciple, mentor, equip, and release men and women to serve God and share the love of Christ, making the most of every opportunity both locally and abroad. Kevin is married to Cristy and has five children.
AN UPDATE FROM THE PRESIDENT
We are fast moving into the summer months and the campus looks and feels quiet—but it is not! This has been a season of demanding engagement on the part of the entire Briercrest team. Our faculty and teachers have adjusted to online learning with their classes and are already gearing up for what the fall might look like. Our days are full of planning with the aid of Zoom as a means of connecting electronically. We have all been on a dramatic growth curve, and we are planning for the fall with so few assurances, and lots of uncertainties.
However, through it all, God has demonstrated incredible grace and provision. Let me share some things to celebrate:

  • Although our students were sad to leave campus, we have kept them engaged and helped them to finish their course work.
  • We are grateful that no one in our community has contracted the COVID-19 virus.
  • We continue to receive applications for new students for the fall and we are trending ahead of last year at this time. Students are anxious to attend Briercrest!
  • We thank God for you—our faithful donors! We have raised $3.49 million towards our goal of $8.9 million.
  • We thank God for our provincial government. In addition to you, our supporters, the Saskatchewan government has given Briercrest a grant of $3 million.
  • We thank God for our federal government. We have received the Canadian Emergency Wage Subsidy of $560,000.
God is sending us students and he is supplying us with the resources necessary to continue educating disciples, equipping the church, and engaging our world.
And so, we press on in the face of uncertainty but with a bold faith.
Michael
