How to STOP faking positivity and GET OUT OF THAT SLUMP!

What you resist persists. So ALLOW yourself to feel low once in a while.
I was at a low point, feeling lethargic, unfocused, messy and a bit negative and a really wonderful mentor of mine gave me two pieces of advice that really rocked my world…
He was talking about the ebbs and flows of our energy levels and how it’s physically IMPOSSIBLE to be in a state of flow ALL THE TIME. He spoke of the vital importance of the highs and lows we experience that make up the whole human experience.
Are you ready? Ok, here's what he told me..
1. Surrender to the low, don’t try to force yourself back to a high. WHAT YOU RESIST PERSISTS so allow it all to be there.
2. Have a contingency plan for when your energy goes to that lower state to BRING YOU BACK TO NEUTRAL.
THE GENIUS HERE is actually in what he didn’t say. He didn’t tell me to “Learn the tools and tricks to try and feel more positive.” He made the point that so long as we can learn to REGULATE ourselves and come back to a place of BALANCE. Once we’ve brought ourselves back to a state of coherence we can realistically see the clearer path that will eventually lead us back to that high.
This made SO MUCH SENSE. SO in order to put this neutralising idea into action I wanted to share a breath work technique that regulates our breathing biochemistry (the levels of carbon dioxide and oxygen in the lungs and in the blood). Remember, if we can raise levels of carbon dioxide slightly in the lungs and in the blood, by making our breathing a little lighter, we can INCREASE our oxygen uptake. MORE OXYGEN gets delivered by BREATHING LESS.
Every emotional state has a breathing pattern. SO if we can learn to regulate our breathing, we can learn to regulate our emotions too. Emotions are just ENERGY IN MOTION, they are both physical AND mental. So ultimately if we can bring OUR BREATHING BACK TO NEUTRAL, naturally our body and mind comes back into balance as well.
