Big Revolution
Although I always balance my other work around this newsletter, occasionally my personal and family life overtakes my time. Today is one of those days and my ‘big thought’ is more 'why is chicken pox still a thing?’ rather than anything to do with tech. As such, there’s no Big Thought section today, but it will back tomorrow.

Big things you need to know today
  • Facebook is to start awarding staff bonuses for achieving ‘social good,’ instead of company growth. That’s an encouraging sign of change at the company, but let’s see how it plays out.
  • Alexa as babysitter? Amazon has launched the Baby Skill Activity API, allowing baby-care apps and devices work through Alexa voice commands. The company is also investing in Hatch Baby, a ‘babytech’ (I just made that up) firm that makes devices like an internet-connected change mat.
  • Apple’s retail chief Angela Ahredts is leaving the company. She’ll be succeeded by HR head Deirdre O’Brien, who will add retail to her responsibilities. Sounds like she’ll be quite busy. Ahredts was a high-profile hire; she was CEO of Burberry before taking a step down the corporate ladder to join Apple.

Business life isn’t quite as simple as this, but it’s an interesting way of thinking:

I think of company culture as a set of sliders:

- remote vs in person
- Google Docs vs Office
- A/B testing vs intuition
- engineering vs sales
- transparent vs private

This could be a fun study to do. Could survey employees and cluster companies.

What axes would you add?
