Big things you need to know today
  • Google will soon give you the option for some personal data to be automatically deleted after three or 18 months. This includes location history, and web and app activity.
  • Vladimir Putin has signed a bill to give Russia the ability to disconnect from the global internet. There are fears this could be used as a tool of oppression and suppression. The new law goes into effect in November.
  • Hootsuite is laying off around 100 employees. A paywalled report from The Logic suggests the company is struggling to adjust to recently-introduced API restrictions made by Twitter and Facebook.
  • Changes in tech media: Recode has now been completely subsumed into Vox. Meanwhile, Eric Schmidt’s daughter Sophie is planning a publication “focused on exploring the surprising and complex effects of technology internationally, specifically outside the US and Europe.””
