Big things you need to know today
  • Twitter/InfoWars latest: Twitter admits InfoWars did break its rules, but will allow it to stay on the platform for now. Slate ponders why this is, while Twitter let the New York Times sit in on a decision-making meeting about problematic content – it’s worth a read.
  • Meanwhile, the NYT reports that Facebook was indeed swung to remove InfoWars after Apple jumped first. Apple’s move helped Mark Zuckerberg make up his mind.
  • WikiLeaks has been sued via Twitter. The Democratic National Committee served legal papers in a tweet after attempts to contact the organisation by email failed.
  • Google will lose out on at least $50m this year due to Fortnite bypassing the Play Store on Android, TechCrunch reports.

Twitter and Facebook Are Platforms, Not Publishers
Are platforms like Facebook and Twitter in fact publishers? Journalism professor Jeff Jarvis strongly believes they’re not - they some new form of public square that hasn’t been fully defined yet. That may be so, but they certainly perform similar editorial functions and even commission content in some cases, so to say they’re not publishers in the slightest is a stretch.
