I have read many books on health, fitness, and nutrition, but gained amazing new insights on the psychology of it all from reading “Bright Line Eating” by Susan Peirce Thompson Ph.D. What fascinates me are the insights she shares about human behavior, addiction, and the psychology of permanent weight loss.
Did you know that we all have a limited amount of willpower? So, if for example, you have to exhibit a lot of willpower to keep up a regular exercise routine, you may not have enough willpower left to stick to your diet. How crazy is that?
What really shocked me was her logical explanation of why sugar and flour are drugs, just like cocaine and heroin…

Sugar Is One of the Most Addictive Substances
By now, most of us have probably heard that studies have shown sugar to be 8 times more addictive than cocaine.
I can’t imagine any of us not being fed sugary treats since childhood. So, basically, we were raised to be addicts. And just like a cigarette addict, you cannot simply taper off to rid yourself of your addiction. You have to go cold turkey!

Sugar Consumption Can Lead to Chronic Inflammation
Since sugar can lead to inflammation, it can make your arthritis worse, and it should be one of the first things to exclude from your diet.
Believe me, I know how challenging this sounds. All my life I have had a sweet tooth and sugary treats are my emotional comfort foods.

Now that you understand the link between sugar and inflammation, you are wondering how to kick the habit in order to lose weight and reduce your arthritis pain and symptoms.
Maybe you’ve already tried giving up sugar in the past, but then gave into the cravings? A few more things I learned from “Bright Line Eating” this week are that the time that the cravings disappear will vary between people, but they will go away. I also learned that on average, it takes 66 days to adopt a new habit, not the commonly assumed 21 days!
So, keep that in mind while you follow some of these suggestions:
1. Distract yourself.
2. Eat a naturally sweet food.
3. Make sure you’re eating enough fat and protein.
4. Drink bone broth.
5. Learn to handle stress in a healthy way.

2. Go Cold Turkey.
3. Eat the Right Foods.
4. Manage Stress.
5. Target Food Allergies.
6. Create an Exercise Plan.
7. Get 8 Hours of Sleep.
