Updates and thoughts on vanilla and flavors
Vanilla expert’s innovations, easily implemented in ag-tech savvy Israel, could slash prices, improve flavor and revive an ancient industry.
The exorbitant price of vanilla gives bakers, home chefs and ice-cream makers a hard choice: paying more for the natural extract than for silver, or using synthetic substitutes that just don’t taste the same.
A better choice is on the horizon, thanks to world vanilla expert Daphna Havkin-Frenkel, a native of Israel working in New Jersey. Her novel growing and curing methods could make high-quality vanilla affordable and plentiful. To read the full article on the future of global vanilla growth click here.
You'll never guess where this vanilla is being grown
Vanilla around the globe
Tanzania: The team at Bakto Flavors returned last week from visiting vanilla growers in Tanzania. We’re excited to share with you that Vanilla 2019 will be taking place in Moshi, Tanzania. Be on the look out for further details!
We were grateful to be hosted by Natural Extracts Industries Ltd, established in Kilimanjaro, Tanzania in 2011. They are developing the vanilla value chain in several regions of the country. It currently works with over 3,700 registered smallholder farmers, each geomapped for full purchasing traceability. The company invests the bulk of its profits on providing extension services for these registered farmers, with a 20-strong field team and 120 contracted farmer champions representing the farmer groups. This combined team provides quarterly training and regular monitoring to farmers on good agricultural practices related to vanilla husbandry and harvesting.
