Hot Shot
Today, the 131-year-old statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee was removed from Monument Avenue to the cheers of dozens of onlookers. For more than a year, the Confederate statue has stood almost alone on the stately avenue, his fellow rebels long gone following weeks of protests after the May 2020 killing of George Floyd. Last summer, the Lee traffic circle quickly became a scene of anti-police protests and public gatherings. In January, the state erected tall and foreboding fencing around the once open and well-tended green space. This morning, as the 21-foot-tall bronze figure was lowered to the ground, it was easy to imagine a look of relief on the old soldier’s face. It was time for the statue to go — perceptions and values have changed. And yet, though the statue is gone, its towering pedestal remains — every inch covered in graffiti, much of it profane. And it will keep standing as is until some determination is made about how to re-imagine that space — and all of Monument Avenue — by a still vague, undefined community team. No one should hold their breath for that.
