China + global technology, business, and innovation trends, 8 items at a time.

China’s investments in tech infrastructure are paying off at home and abroad, and leading indicators look great for next generation technology:
Here’s a list of 20 Chinese AI executives to watch as they drive the development of perhaps the most important emerging technology. With SenseTime, China now has the most valuable AI startup in the world.
–More on China’s New Retail from Economist and Axios. It feels like Chinese companies have a stronger intuitive grasp of O2O (online to offline) e-commerce, which will eventually be most commerce.
–Jeff Towson analyzes Didi vs. Uber in Mexico and growing competition between U.S. and rising Chinese tech giants in third-country markets.
–The current moment of soul-searching around U.S. technology has put more of a spotlight on China’s development, though some still insist its model can’t last. I think China is pretty robust and would have a much easier time than the U.S. ideologically and operationally moving to UBI
FT quotes investors on this “boom time for China’s billion-dollar startups,” and the WSJ examines how China’s VC sector growth is shifting power from Silicon Valley to China. That article is paywalled, but here’s an interesting Hacker News discussion about it.
–As I write this, someone in China probably founded a $1B+ company. Caixin reports growth of 55 to 164 Chinese unicorns in just one year.
Thanks for reading. If you want to connect around corporate innovation, China outbound tech, or hiring, teambuilding, and training, (or if you can snag me a ticket for D.Live in HK - looks amazing) just hit reply.
