Welcome to lucky number 13! What’s on my mind? Sunshine and longer days, newspapers and art fairs, Dutch fika and melancholic madeleines, the meaning of home and stumbling into rockstars. Great things are happening!

Fresh off the press!
Feature // 180 Amsterdammers
Miss Philippines
Today is the day! My portrait (taken by Michiel van Nieuwkerk) is featured on today’s Het Parool, one of the biggest newspapers in Holland, as part of the 180 Amsterdammers project. An article and video interview is also online, where I tell a little bit of where I came from (Manila!) and how I feel about my new home, Amsterdam. Yay!

Projects // Hello Amsterdam
I wrote the city updates for the March-April issue of Hello Amsterdam magazine, featuring the most exciting exhibitions, events, festivals and new shops in the city. Read it online here:

Feature // Atomorfen's Cozy Conversations
Our apartment was featured on Atomorfen, an interior design blog run by Eva and Alex, a creative couple based in Moscow. (Eva also painted my portrait awhile back!) They interviewed me about my thoughts on home, my workspace, favourite design items, minimalism (I am against it) and the importance of individuality. Read the full interview here:

Art fair // Unfair Amsterdam
Jannie van Oene (NL)
Kyle Tryhorn (CA)
I’m super excited for Unfair Amsterdam, an innovative art fair presenting the most recent, unprecedented work of upcoming and established talent. The fair showcases over 40 solo presentations of artists who have graduated within the last ten years, and provides an opportunity for visitors to get in touch directly with them. I’m especially looking forward to Unframed (I’m definitely going to get those limited edition patches - so cute!), and the Subbacultcha <3 Unfair festival and afterparty tomorrow night. Music and art, my favourite combination.
I’m going to the press preview later today, so make sure to follow me on Instagram to get a sneak peak before everyone else. ;)

Exhibition // Hermès Festival des Métiers
Another event that I’m looking forward to is the Hermès’ Festival des Métiers at the atmospheric Hollandsche Manege horse stables. Hermès’ special traveling exhibition offers a fascinating look at the luxury house’s traditions in crafting fine objects. Get to meet the artisans themselves as they create the brand’s iconic handbags, watches, fine jewellery and other objects. Entrance is free.

Fika // The Dutchies are catching up

Okay, I think this is my fault. “Fika this, fika that.” I’ve been spreading the fika love so much that two Dutch news channels have published articles about this great Swedish tradition:

Manila // Bamboo and brutalism
Photo: Everywhere We Shoot
A gorgeously written article about the city of my birth: Manila. “In five words: intense roiling, underrated fever dream.” I can almost feel the sweltering heat and the pulsating energy. The smell of home. Love you always, my delightful fever dream.

Photography // Fictitious dishes
Swann’s Way by Marcel Proust, 1913
Loving Dinah Fried’s Fictitious Dishes: An Album of Literature’s Most Memorable Meals, in which she cooks, art-directs, and photographs meals from nearly two centuries of famous fiction. One of my favourites is Swann’s Way’s melancholic madeleines, perhaps one of my favourite moments in literature as well:
“She sent out for one of those short, plump little cakes called ’petites madeleines,’ which look as though they had been moulded in the fluted scallop of a pilgrim’s shell. And soon, mechanically, weary after a dull day with the prospect of a depressing morrow, I raised to my lips a spoonful of the tea in which I had soaked a morsel of the cake. No sooner had the warm liquid, and the crumbs with it, touched my palate than a shudder ran through my whole body, and I stopped, intent upon the extraordinary changes that were taking place. An exquisite pleasure had invaded my senses, but individual, detached, with no suggestion of its origin. And at once the vicissitudes of life had become indifferent to me, its disasters innocuous, its brevity illusory–this new sensation having had on me the effect which love has of filling me with a precious essence; or rather this essence was not in me, it was myself. I had ceased now to feel mediocre, accidental, mortal. Whence could it have come to me, this all-powerful joy? I was conscious that it was connected with the taste of tea and cake, but that it infinitely transcended those savours, could not, indeed, be of the same nature as theirs. Whence did it come? What did it signify? How could I seize upon and define it?”

Cosmic surprises
Hanging out with Brandon Boyd last week at his "Heart of Gold" exhibition
Stay curious, look around, be open. Get up, go out and show up. Who knows? Maybe a super big rockstar has an exhibition in some secluded art gallery nearby, and he becomes your friend. Or, you meet the most amazing people in your life in a random club. Or, you simply live and make golden memories that will last a lifetime. Seize that all-powerful scintillating joy and savor it, and live it.
Love,
Angel xxx
