At the official kick-off with the Mayor of Amsterdam
180 Amsterdammers is an inspiring project celebrating the unique diversity of the city - 180 nationalities live here, including yours truly, your favourite Filipina! 😁💕✨ 🇵🇭🇳🇱
I’m super happy to be representing the Philippines in this amazing city I now call home. During yesterday’s kick-off at Amsterdam Museum, I got to meet the mayor himself, and speak a little bit about my experience as a new Amsterdammer. The presenter, Sylvana Simons (a famous presenter in Holland), asked if I knew how long I would be staying in Amsterdam. I answered, “I hope forever.” The audience cheered and let out a collective “Awwww.” I will always remember that moment.
The campaign will feature our portraits (by Dutch photographer Michiel van Nieuwkerk) on one of the biggest dailies in the country, Het Parool, and on bus and tram stops all over Amsterdam. There will also be a video interview series, a book and an exhibition. Can’t wait to share all these with you in the upcoming weeks!

Projects // A-Mag Mini Issue #2
For the past few months, I’ve been working on the A-Mag Mini special issues for the Dutch EU Presidency as editor-in-chief. I’m super happy to present our second issue, which you can read here. Alongside interviews, Q&A’s and listings for the latest art and cultural events in Amsterdam, my favourite stories include Van Gogh’s life in Amsterdam, and a sweet spots directory of the best Dutch pastries and cakes in the city. Go for it!

New // X Bank
This awe-inspiring 700-square metre hybrid store is filled to the brink with today’s most inspiring Dutch fashion, art and design. Located in a former Art Deco bank, just a few steps away from Dam Square, X Bank showcases a collection of works by over 180 premium, upcoming and influential Dutch designers including Avelon, Bas Kosters, Driessens & Van der Baar, Droog, Schuller De Waal, and many others. With prices ranging from 8 Euros (a tin of Dutch apple syrup) to 80,000 Euros (a pistol artwork by Ted Noten) every small and big treasure can be found here: from jewellery, men’s suits and bags to design objects, magazines and artwork. Downstairs is X Bank Art, a contemporary art gallery with small and large scale exhibitions.
I can spend hours wandering in there, it’s truly a bank of wonders. ;) I had such a great time at the launch a couple of weeks ago! I highly recommend visiting it if you’re in Amsterdam: combine it with a stay at W Hotel just across X Bank - they have the cosiest beds and the most beautiful showers ever!

On repeat in my head, while biking around town, or dancing in my living room: Tame Impala’s The Less I Know The Better. The music video is fantastic as well!

Angel Loves // Pin-up Pineapples
I’m loving Pin-Up Pineapples‘ enamel pins! I randomly found Mali’s Instagram account and ordered the Friday Night pin (above). Found out that Mali is an art director based in Amsterdam, but originally from Singapore, thus also an island girl like me! (Spoiler alert: I invited her to be in the 180 Amsterdammers project as Ms. Singapore, cool huh!) I just love how Instagram and social media in general bring people together. Anyway, check out her pins! The Amsterdam canal house pin is on my wish list:

Photography // Levitating dogs
The Levitators by Ruth Van Beek
The Levitators by Ruth Van Beek
I have a soft spot for dogs in art. These beautiful levitating dogs are just gorgeous. I saw some of the pieces at last year’s Unseen Photo Fair. Dutch artist Ruth van Beek talks about the series in a Four & Sons magazine article. “Animals are often depicted as objects or artefacts, and this has always interested me,” Van Beek says. “By cutting and folding found photographs, I try to bring these dogs back to life, but instead of releasing them, I restrain them again in a new shape by changing their form, scale and colour. Each of these dogs posed patiently for the camera and their owners, but when we are not looking, a hidden world appears: a world of dreams and nightmares, weirdness, futilities, and beautiful coincidences.“

Watching Slowdive at my friend Tessel's place (Shoegaze adoration night!)
Watching Slowdive at my friend Tessel's place (Shoegaze adoration night!)
Last week, my friend Tessel invited me to “Shoegaze Adoration Night” at her place to watch a Slowdive documentary over beers and wine. I met her lovely cat Lowietje (a tailgazer), and a bunch of her sweet friends who understood what shoegaze was about and have the same love for this lush, beautiful music genre.
At the 180 Amsterdammers kick-off, Sylvana asked if we had a specific moment when we thought to ourselves, “Yes, indeed I’m an Amsterdammer now. I am home.” Thuisgevoel. I think this was my moment - when I found myself in a cosy living room with kindred hearts, feeling that I belonged. When I entered the room, Tessel showed me off to her friends like a prize, “This is Angel. She’s the only girl I know who also likes shoegaze!”
The night was sparkling, lush, splendid, full of promise. Just like a Slowdive song.
To new friends, to feeling at home wherever you are, and to love,
Angel xx
