Hello! Not too much by way of personal news this week, although I am in the final stretch of training for next week’s Traverse City Bayshore Half Marathon, which is exciting. Here’s hoping this ‘Birthday Cake’ flavored Gu (energy gel for endurance training) does the trick during the big race! (I’m skeptical 🤣) See you next week.

  1. I bought/pre-ordered three books this week: Steal Like an Artist and Show Your Work! to complete my Austin Kleon collection, and Chris Guillebeau’s new 100 Side Hustles idea book, due out June 4.
  2. For $50, the Amazon Fire 7 tablet (upgraded version out this week) has to be the perfect road trip device for kids.
  3. Always nice to see an update to Things, my go-to to-do app, even if it’s all under the hood.
  4. MacMenuBar is a curated directory of 230+ apps for your menubar on macOS.
  5. Ian Barnard is an amazing artist specializing in hand-drawn lettering, and this time-lapse of him drawing the Back to the Future logo with an Apple Pencil on the iPad is impressive.
  6. Matt Birchler shares some initial thoughts on the new Google Pixel 3a ($399).
  7. I didn’t think there was much improvement to be made with the humble screwdriver, but this Kickstarter makes me think I thought wrong.
  8. The iconic TWA flight center at JFK in NYC (so many abbreviations here) has been remade into the TWA Hotel.
  9. I can’t wrap my head around this recently discovered optical illusion. It just seems impossible.
  10. Apparently I’m not the only one who remembers that McDonald’s served pizza — yes, pizza — for a brief time in the 1990s.
