This week I’ve been digging into Michael Hyatt’s Total Productivity Makeover – particularly the first of the three videos: “The To-Do List Tamer.”
One thing I’ve noticed as I’ve progressed in my career – this will be my 12th year in Admissions at Hope College – is that my to-do list never shrinks. No, it only grows, and I’m starting to realize that the current growth trajectory is just not sustainable.
Enter Michael’s video on dealing with getting things done and the overwhelming feeling that there’s too much to do and not enough time to do it. Well, you should watch the video. It’s only about 20 minutes long, and it will certainly get you thinking.
But I’ll let you know how it’s impacted me this week. My big takeaway was to approach large, interrupted work sessions with a far, far shorter list of big picture things to accomplish. Michael suggests generating a list of just three. I’ve taken to this over the last two days, and it’s been a breath of fresh air.
I’m not scouring my list of 25 things for the next thing to do. Nope, I simply pick the top three and don’t go back to the bigger list until those are done.
I’ve found this incredibly freeing. And instead of the guilt I’ve usually felt from not completing all those different tasks, I’m experiencing the great satisfaction in dutifully fulfilling the most important three at that moment. That’s a big win for me.
I hope you enjoy this week’s links – I’m focusing on more things that might improve your work and your life. Enjoy.
