✅ July 4: This couple celebrates our 50th wedding anniversary with GRATITUDE, thankfulness, and reflection.
🔥 Speaking of notable occasions, this week starts the 3-week countdown before the routine, periodic, quarterly infusion therapy (aka IVig) for an immune system boost with immunoglobulin. And 50 is the estimated total number of IVigs in our lifetime medical record. The treatment is very common for patients who have had long-term chemotherapy with a drug called Rituxan.
🔥 Yes, gratefully, I achieved sustained, continuous remission from mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) in January 2010 after the April 2006 diagnosis and subsequent chemotherapy followed by an allogeneic stem cell transplant (2007) and a brief relapse in 2009. Still, the IVigs remain indefinitely for maintenance therapy.
🔥 In GRATITUDE for this treatment via the City of Hope Corona clinic, I am also curious about the donation process that makes this possible. We are visiting the Corona clinic for the first time in more than 15 years of care at City of Hope (COH). This location is about 15-20 minutes from home rather than the 60-90 minute trip to Duarte, the main COH campus. The COVID-19 pandemic has introduced the option of neighborhood outpatient clinics for routine medical hematology care.
🔥 How many donors does it take to accumulate enough blood plasma, not to mention the raw blood, that underpins the lifeline for patients in such need universally? Can that be calculated?
🔥 Regardless of the answer, we start this REVUE with the story about an octogenarian Aussie who may hold the world record for plasma donations but has given his last due to age limits down under.

GRATITUDE, \ grat•i•tude grăt′ĭ-too͞d″, -tyoo͞d″ (n)
  • of being grateful; thankful
  • state or quality of being grateful or thankful; a warm and friendly feeling in response to a favor or favors received; thankfulness
  • synonyms (See grateful)
🔥 Robert Emmons, perhaps the world’s leading scientific expert on gratitude, argues that gratitude has two key components, which he describes in a Greater Good essay, “Why Gratitude Is Good.”
“First,” he writes, “it’s an affirmation of goodness. We affirm that there are good things in the world, gifts and benefits we’ve received.”
In the second part of gratitude, he explains, “we recognize that the sources of this goodness are outside of ourselves. … We acknowledge that other people—or even higher powers, if you’re of a spiritual mindset—gave us many gifts, big and small, to help us achieve the goodness in our lives.” | SOURCE
