Varjo, the Swedish headsets with super-realistic mixed reality, launched its Reality Cloud. A big step towards two of the great promises of VR/AR, teleportation and virtual collaboration. With their Varjo XR-3 headset, you can capture your reality in the cloud and share it live with someone else. The video pass through system digitizes the world and their LIDAR software turns it into a 3D space. This virtual space can be “projected” by someone else somewhere else in the world onto their own space. And they are together in this virtual world.
Wow! A Metaverse, a shared virtual excistence, grounded in reality. Which you can edit and modify together. Working with each other, having fun, playing sports, everything. I can imagine that as soon as more smartphones, like the iPhone12 Pro, get a LiDAR scan, that this in the future also can work mobile. For example in a connected Lens from Snapchat that you are together in a scanned virtual space. Of course not as realistic as this. “See you at the other side!” as Varjo’s CEO Timo Toikkanen said.
Artist Dustin Yellin, advertising agency Droga5 and the National WildLife Federation have launched the Procession AR app. A virtual work of art that shows where our world will go if we don’t do anything about climate change. You are in a dystopian world and you have to find 10 of the 40 disappearing animal species. Well done.
Corona has achieved a Net Zero Plastic Footprint this year and they are proud of that and they want to draw extra attention to the pollution caused by plastic waste with a weAR experience. You fill in a number of questions about your consumption behavior and in webAR you can see your year in plastic. All bottles fall from the sky and then you can see through a portal that all that plastic ends up on beautiful beaches. A really nice experience. Try it yourself.
JigSpace is a kind of Canva for 3D presentations to explain/learn something. This 3D knowledge sharing can be viewed in AR via the app and has about 4 million users. Anyone can make their own Jig and manufacturers can easily create product demonstrations by uploading their CAD files. They have now raised new funding of $4.7 million. And they recently teamed up with Snapchat and use Snapchat Scan for a special JigSpace Lens to learn about your sink or coffee maker. I strongly believe in knowledge transfer in AR because 3D is so much clearer, offers opportunities for interaction and it has been scientifically proven that people remember 3D content better. In the field of content marketing, there are many opportunities for brands on social platforms such as Instagram/Facebook and Snapchat.
The HoloLens brings 2 extinct animals back to life at the French National History Museum in Paris. During the exhibition Relive Extinct Animals In Augmented Reality you will encounter animals such as the saber-toothed tiger, the Dodo in a 15-minute AR tour where you will be guided by an AR pigeon. The trailer looks very promising, but the trouble is that there is no real footage from the HoloLens anywhere to find. So if you’re in Paris and stop by, let me know how it was. :)
