Wine Marketing Weekly - The Fine Wine Investment Issue #13
By Mike & Roland • Issue #13 • View online
The top-end South African wine market is currently falling over itself to ‘get prices up.’ Nothing stimulates debate like a price hike. But what about value? Is it not time that we start curating much more carefully our prized top vintages with an eye on future value. The wine we release today is a rare icon of tomorrow - so lets plan today. Some might argue that ‘Fine Wine’ and ‘ Wine Investment’ is a premature concept for South Africa. But they are wrong. We have produced the iconic investment wines already - we just haven’t realised it.

MICHAEL FRIDJHON: AN SA EVOLOUTION?
It is 24 years since Michael Fridjhon wrote in Wine Magazine that the South African market was too small to provide opportunities for wine investment (Fridjhon,1994). Asked whether that is still the case in 2011, Fridjhon replied that it is;
‘There is insufficient demand, lack of agreement on what would be the icons, concerns over quality of storage and no real transactional environment’ (Fridjhon, 2011).
The Business Day article below was published in January 2016. The times - they are changing.
