BREAKING: Musk settles with SEC, ousted as chairman of Tesla
By Elizabeth Lopatto • Issue #9 • View online
Elon Musk will remain CEO of Tesla as part of his settlement of the SEC’s suit from Thursday, which was a thousand years ago. The settlement agreement does note that it only resolves the civil case — so it’ll have no result on the possible criminal probe.
As the world’s nosiest neighbor, though, I am so excited about boardroom intrigue! Who will be the next chairman? My favorite candidates are…
  1. Kimbal Musk, Elon’s younger brother, and cowboy hat enthusiast. Kimbal has been making more appearances lately to reassure investors about Tesla, and obviously he and Elon are quite close.
  2. James Murdoch, Rupert’s son and clean energy enthusiast. Disney’s purchase of 21st Century Fox will close early next year, and Murdoch will leave the company. Vanity Fair has speculated Murdoch is considering moving into venture capital — so a Tesla chairmanship could be especially valuable in making Silicon Valley connections.
  3. Antonio Gracias, who played a role in securing the Boring Company’s Chicago deal. He was also the lead among the board members who were evaluating the take-private deal; he and Elon are obviously also quite close.
Ahhh but! This is Tesla. Anything could happen. I just hope that anything is reported in excruciating detail.
