Trying to summarize 2021, the quote “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times” comes to mind. Charles Dickens was cruel to his wife and dismissive of people living in the British colonies, thinking their culture was inferior to Western culture. But he could write. The opening of “The Tale of Two Cities” from 1859 is perhaps the best description of the year we just lived through:
“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us.”
As The New Division entered its fourth year, the pandemic threw a wrench into everybody’s lives. Unfortunately, it also stopped several of the sustainability projects that we had in the pipeline. The year was a sucker punch to progress, and it was frustrating to be on pause. But by the end of 2020, conversations about our purpose in life became frequent, and in its wake, serious conversations about injustice and climate change rippled through society.
In January 2021, just as we entered our fifth year, our inboxes started to fill up. The year that started bleak turned out to be our most exciting yet. We are growing fast and have done many exciting projects with clients that have turned into friends. It comes naturally when you are on a mission. Yet, it feels like the year was only an appetizer. We are ready and standing by for an even better year in 2022. See you then.
