Amazon & Shopify results week:
It was Q2 & half year result week, a tough one:
eCommerce is on track with pre-covid expectations, but not faster. Shopify CEO Tobias Luetke puts it this way: “We bet that the channel mix - the share of dollars that travel through eCommerce rather than physical retail - would permanently leap ahead by 5 or even 10 years. We couldn’t know for sure at the time, but we knew that if there was a chance that this was true, we would have to expand the company to match. It’s now clear that bet didn’t pay off.” A 10% workforce cut was announced this week along with its quarterly loss of $1.2B.
Amazon shares still jumped +14%- reacting positively to a smaller than expected loss in eCommerce, and strong AWS results.
