AI Researcher & Entrepreneur

Hi there! My name is Shalev Lifshitz and I am a 16 year old Canadian, excited about recent innovations and how I can be a part of the future! With an interest in Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning, I am currently working at the SickKids Goldenberg Lab, the Waterloo KIMIA Lab, taking multiple undergraduate courses, and reading some amazing textbooks on Machine Learning! I hope you enjoy my Newsletter!

Research Assistant at the KIMIA Lab
Recently, I started a new position as a Research Assistant at the University of Waterloo’s KIMIA Lab. I am co-authoring a paper with the aim of discovering new AI methods for image identification. Working on this project has introduced me to the difficulties one encounters when coming up with and implementing new research ideas and working through these challenges has been extremely rewarding! The research is very exciting and I hope to share my progress with you next newsletter!
Creating a Generalizable AI for Cell Images
The goal of my research at the SickKids Goldenberg Lab has expanded. I am creating a tool to quickly gather patient data from cell images and speed up the diagnostic process, but previously the system was meant to work on only one image type. Now my aim is to create a fully generalizable system that will work with different image types. This change is pushing the project to a whole new level, enabling it’s widespread use across different labs, hospitals and the globe. To achieve this, a great deal of data cleaning and labeling is being done. Over the past few weeks I have been speaking with SickKids researchers, gathering image data and learning how to use current tools to annotate/label these images. Soon, the data will be ready and the next step in training will begin. Check back next month to see my progress!
