Everyone should be an artist. Words can be art. Food can be art. The things you build with your hands can be art. Every human (and even non-human) creation has the potential to be art.
But not every creation is regarded as art. Art is typically reserved as a label for particularly skillful or “artful” creations. Sure we’re all going to half-ass a lot of things in life and create with zero aesthetic intent purely to “get the job done”. I’d argue that some of the best art is made with a blatant disregard for what other people typically desire.
Brutalism is a great example of a style that focuses on function over aesthetics. There is something very authentic about stripping away the fluff and getting straight to the point. I find it very pleasing to look at something honest, that was not made purely for my viewing pleasure.
Maybe my view was partially shaped by growing up on a farm. I was regularly exposed to skillful yet functional creations. Building a fence that would last 20 years was regarded as art in my world.
So next time you make something, do it with purpose. And know that it is art in someone’s world.
