Whenever I think about Grinding Gear Games and Path of Exile, I smile. And it’s not just because I enjoy the game or the studio’s design ethos, selling microtransactions that don’t give players an advantage over those that don’t spend.
I think back to when I first talked to studio general manager Chris Wilson (no relation) and technical director Jonathan Rogers. It was 2010, and I was working at GamePro (protip: RIP). They had come in to show me Path of Exile. The pitch about an online take on Diablo II intrigued the hell out of me, and covering new studios has always been one of my favorite parts of the games beat.
But we had a problem: They left their laptop with the demo at the Subway sandwich shop down the street.
This didn’t stop Rogers and Wilson from putting on a good presentation. Path of Exile looked like a good game from the start, and it’s gone on to become a leading action-RPG. It has millions of players, attracted investment from Tencent, and landed on consoles, and now it’s embarking on its next chapter – Path of Exile 2 and Path of Exile Mobile
And yes, Rogers and Wilson found their laptop, capping off this happy ending. We still laugh about this today.
