From Bad to Worse….
Another tough week for Liverpool, where a win at Bramall Lane against Sheffield United was followed up by the now customary Home defeats, first to Chelsea, then to relegation candidates Fulham. This is really turning into a nightmare season, where the whole range of excuses were used - Shortened pre season, Injuries, Squad size, Injuries, No Fans, Injuries, Injuries, VAR, Injuries, FSG, Grief. Some valid it must be said, but the over riding issue is that this squad looks short of ideas and hunger, 2 of the things that made them “Mentality Giants”. Some of this must be laid at the feet of Jurgen Klopp, a man rightly lauded for the good work he has done, but also a man famed for his motivation and man management. The excuses have all been used, but at the very core of our problems is a team who look to be phoning in this season, going through the motions, bereft of ideas and application and seemingly willing to let their title defense peter out with a whimper.
Jurgen Klopp, a human emotional roller coaster, will feel every knock this season to the team, will feel every injury to his lieutenants, on top of the grief of losing his mother and unable to to pay his last respects. We don’t know what toll this year has taken on the manager, but it looks like a rest and reset may be required. The damage done by this season, where we have fallen off a cliff, will take a lot of work, time and investment to fix. We have the best man for the job, IF he has the hunger and desire to start again. But it means FSG, Jurgen Klopp and whatever players from this current crop that go into next season all need to look hard at themselves and own their mistakes and take responsibility. No fans are happy with this current situation, but we must regain the confidence, belief and swagger to get back to the top of the mountain. But there may be more dark days to come….
