The authors is a researcher whose research, which draws on survey data from more than 10,000 North America parents, looks at how families manage technology and has shown that kids with more tech access actually get into less trouble with technology. She argues that “our screen time fixation isn’t about kids at all. It’s about mothers. What’s really going on is an age-old problem: we don’t like innovations that make mothers’ lives easier.”
The report identifies a significant digital equality gap between low-income kids who are far less likely to have access to computers, tablets and smartphones than their wealthier peers. However, those low-income kids who do have access are more likely to spend more time on their devices than kids from more affluent families.
