I’m heading to Assateague Island on the coast of Maryland this weekend for an overnight combined Beaches on the Air & Parks on the Air activation.
Assateague Island National Seashore is a 37-mile long barrier island (48,000 acres) located off the eastern coast of the Delmarva peninsula facing the Atlantic Ocean.
One of the really cool features of this barrier island are the wild horses that still roam undisturbed (and the key reason my wife wanted visit lol).
There are two different types of campgrounds: car camping and primitive backcountry.
I think ya’ll can guess which one I am doing.
There are several backcountry sites right on the beach with the caveat you have to hike everything into these primitive camp sites. Distances range from 4 to 10 miles depending on how far you want to hike in.
I’m not sure what site we will go to, however you can watch our progress as we walk down the beach.
Once we arrive at the site and the tent is set up, I plan on operating most of the day and into the night. Considering there is nothing else to do other than stare at the Atlantic ocean, operating my KX3 sounds like a pretty good plan.
Modes: CW & SSB; 40 though 6m
I will spot myself on the spotting networks as I operate giving everyone a chance to make contact with me. If you hear me on HF, please be sure pass the my current operating info on the social media networks (Twitter, Facebook, etc) as not everyone monitors the spotting networks.

Details:
Date: October 12 - 13th, 2019
Parks on the Air Designator: K-0671
Beaches on the Air Designator: 4143 (No activations have been completed at this site!)
Time: Starting at 10:00 EST and wrapping up Sunday am.
I will have my InReach and as always you can follow me in real time and watch me as I hike the beach.
I will also try to update my Twitter account as the week goes on.
