Free Portable Book Giveaway!
In the spirit of the holidays, I am doing two free book giveaway drawings of my book, “Portable Operating for Amateur Radio”. The drawings will take place on 12/31/2019 for two lucky names.
Hiking Pole Yagi Antenna for Extreme Environments
Hiking Pole Yagi Antenna for Extreme Environments
Turning my hiking poles into a Yagi antenna has been a project I have been working for quite awhile now. Using Fusion 360 and a 3D printer, I made several prototypes and finally have the finished product.
See my website for details.

Did some experimenting last night with the Raspberry Pi and Ham Clock by WB0OEW and other applications. The GPS keeps time and everything else is running except the SignaLink USB. I'll get it eventually. #amateurradio #hamradio #hamclock https://t.co/fNdv3arOAt

Upcoming Joshua Tree National Park Trip
Joshua Tree National Park
Joshua Tree National Park
My wife and I stopped giving Christmas presents to each other years ago. Instead, we like to take trips (usually centered around hiking). This year we are heading to Joshua Tree National Park in California.
Dates: January 1st-5th, 2020
SOTA Sites:
W6/SD-037, Inspiration Benchmark - 5613, 6 points
W6/CD-016, Ryan Mountain - 1663m, 4 points
W6/SD-030, Queen Mountain - 5698feet, 6 points
Parks on the Air: K-0041
Gear:
This time I am taking my Elecraft KX3, Packtenna random wire antenna, and Packtenna Dipole. Back by popular demand, I will be actually be on SSB this time!
What is the best way to find me on the air?
Summits on the Air: I will post alerts based on my best guess of dates/times of summits that I will activate.
Parks on the Air: POTA Scheduler
Considering every QSO made in the park qualifies for POTA, if you contact me between 1/1-5/2020, consider it in the log as a POTA contact.
**Note: all logs from the Death Valley NP trip have been uploaded.
For spotting, I will use my InReach via the Iridiumm Gods above.
InReach has a handy feature that you can spot to Twitter directly.
My website, KB1HQS now has HamAlert which posts my latest spots from the spotting networks and my Twitter feed.
Want to follow my path in real time?
You have two options:
*On SpotWalla, click the trip (Joshua Tree NP) to see the latest spots.
