As I’ve expanded my circle and conversations, I’ve come across more and more teams and companies that are struggling to decide where to put their resources and energy. Should we build feature A or feature B? What do we do when the customers tell us conflicting things?
I believe the answer to this is to refine your strategy. I’ve seen firsthand that when there is a clear and believable strategy in place, these kinds of decisions become much easier. When everyone agrees on what outcome you are trying to drive for what target user, you can gather evidence as to which of the proposed directions get you closer to that outcome. The decision becomes evidence-based instead of influence-based. And that creates better products, and better companies.
