Fair Warning - Broadband speeds, a beer roadtrip, and blue waves

Hi! I missed last week because I am in the middle of trying to buy a flat and also getting kicked out of my current flat (sort of) so I basically spent last Sunday cleaning the place from top to bottom and was so tired I couldn’t bear to do much else.

Before we get to the good stuff I wanted to say how pleased I was to see reporter Lewis Vaughan Jones talk about his sudden hearing loss on the BBC. I’m in a very different situation as I have had hearing loss all my life but I wrote about struggling with being deaf in a newsroom a couple of years ago. I think it’s uniquely challenging in a newsroom because, honestly, they aren’t the most sympathetic or easy of workplaces at the best of times. I hope by talking about it openly Lewis has made a few people think.

Bad charts of the week
This one was actually sent in for last week by C with the opening gambit, “I dislike this on a molecular level”. Main issues for C were the design being a mess, the data being inaccurate (“no-one “expected” England to get to the semis in 2010”), and the omission of ‘didn’t even qualify’ as a category. Here it is:
Our second entrant this week was sent in by L. It’s from a French paper(?) and basically it’s… just horrible. The data doesn’t really justify the presentation and WHO WALKS FISH?? The most interesting thing here is how much the French love cats.
Lastly… A random little thing on Twitter that made my day.
That’s all for this week! If you are enjoying reading Fair Warning, please forward it to people who would also like it, encourage friends to subscribe to it, buy me a coffee to say thanks, or support Fair Warning on Patreon if you’re so inclined. I’m on Twitter @SophieWarnes.
Thanks to: C, L, M.
