EU Plans ‘Massive’ Increase in Green Energy to Help End Reliance on Russia
The Russian/ Ukraine conflict has had several long-reaching impacts across many parts of the world. But one positive is the realisation that many countries have come to regarding the source of their energy and the reliance they have on cruel dictatorships.
The EU is planning to increase its renewable portfolio massively as a way of reducing this reliance.
EU needed to find an extra €210bn (£178bn) over the next five years to pay for phasing out Russian fossil fuels and speeding up the switch to green energy. But phasing out Russian gas means coal-fired power plants “might also be used longer than initially expected”, states the EU strategy. The decision to quit Russian gas has also led to a scramble to increase Europe’s imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from countries such as the US and Qatar, as well as pipeline gas from Azerbaijan. So it’s not all great.

We’re big fans of Octopus Energy on this podcast. Their ability to upset the energy market through leveraging technology rather than ‘colouring within the lines’ sets them apart from many other energy companies.
So when they produce a study saying that they can save customers billions through localised pricing I sit up and take notice.
The New Airlines Betting Flying Is About to Take Off
We did a whole podcast episode on electric flight earlier on in the season and one of the things we noted was that there are billions of flight tickets sold every year causing untold amounts of greenhouse gases and air pollution.
So it’s a little dispiriting to see that new airlines are springing up and passenges are returning en masse to the airlines.
This Company Crushes Old Roads—and Rebuilds Them to Store Carbon
The holy grail of carbon capture is to put the captured carbon somewhere it can’t easily escape. if you grow trees then a forest fire can burn them releasing the carbon back into the air.
So when a company discovered they could capture carbon and, literally, bake it into the roads we’re driving on, I paid attention.
Carbon Crusher builds new roads as well as fixes old and damaged ones, and it does so using lignin, an organic polymer found in trees that becomes a waste byproduct of paper production (and which is often then burned, generating more emissions). This “green carbon binder,” as the company calls it, contains carbon from its natural life, and continues to sequester carbon in the roads
The company’s literal carbon crusher, an 8-ton metal robot perched atop a John Deere tractor, pulverizes the roads, breaking them into fine gravel and then binding the particles with the lignin.
According to the company, its method reduces emissions by approximately 3.5 tons per 100 feet of road, compared to traditional methods

Hydrovolt, the largest battery recycling plant in Europe, has started operations in Fredrikstad, Norway.
The plant is a joint venture between two Norwegian companies – Hydro, one of the world’s largest aluminium companies, and Northvolt, a battery producer building battery factories in Sweden and Germany.
The new battery recycling facility has the capacity to process 12,000 tons of battery packs per year, or around 25,000 EV batteries. This is enough for the entire end-of-life battery market in Norway, currently.
Hydrovolt claims that it can recover 95% of the materials used in an EV battery including plastics, copper, aluminium, and the “black mass,” a powder containing the various elements inside lithium-ion batteries – nickel, manganese, cobalt, and lithium.
Following on from the message of this episode of the podcast, there are lots of people who will use clickbait headlines to say that batteries aren’t recyclable because nobody is doing it at the moment. That is clearly inaccurate and this is another nail in the coffin of that particular piece of FUD.

Royal Mint wants to turn your old phone into gold.
One thing the Royal Mint does is produce decorative gold coins. It has now decided that to source that gold - rather than buying on the open market and encouraging further mining in places such as South Africa - it is going to reclaim the gold (and other metals) from disused consumer electronics.
Using a system they’ve perfected in the lab and are now starting to scale up, they literally take circuit boards and other old electronics, break them up, dissolve them and heat them to produce pure gold.
It’s a great application of the reduce/ reuse/ recycle mantra.
